John Vertue

John Vertue (or Virtue) (1826–1900) was an English prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the first Bishop of Portsmouth from 1882 to 1900.
Born in London on 28 April 1826, Vertue was a student at St. Edmund's College, Ware between 1845 and 1848. He was ordained to the priesthood on 20 December 1851.
On 3 June 1882, Vertue was appointed the first Bishop of Portsmouth by Pope Leo XIII. He received his episcopal consecration on the following 25 July from Cardinal Henry Manning, Archbishop of Westminster, with Bishops Herbert Vaughan of Salford (later Archbishop of Westminster) and William Weathers, Auxiliary of Westminster, serving as co-consecrators.〔
Bishop Vertue died in office on 23 May 1900, aged 74.〔
